Wayne Charmer
Wayne Charmer fell in love with the properties of kiln-fused glass when
experimenting incorporating a variety of materials within the glass itself.
In the earlier stages of his career he was driven by the unpredictability of the medium. The technical nature of the material changes when fired at temperatures exceeding 800°c. It undergoes many different transformations
from a solid to a liquid compound, which can affect the final outcome
in many surprising ways.
Over the past nine years he has explored its many technical
qualities and gained more control with the material to produce his unique
handmade designs.
Inspiration for his work is drawn from his immediate environment and first impressions of places when travelling.
This could be anything from manmade structures in urban environments to organic textures found more rurally.
Colours, textures and forms are taken from this inspiration and
combined the fluid and technical properties
of glass. Working with the material, rather than against it, he lets the designs evolve from one piece to another.
His latest collection ‘Explore and Exploit’ derives from his dog walks along the Kent countryside during winter.
Pieces of precut and broken glass have been fired and kept at a high temperature where the glass melts, devitrifies and crystalizes on the top
surface of the glass. The glass pieces still leave a trace of a line adding complex detail when the light catches it.
Earlier work ‘Relic’ is inspired by his travels in Asia and closer to home. Using bas-relief techniques a one off mould his made where the glass is laid on top and melts into the mould. Once complete the glass is turned around leaving a relief pattern. Each piece explore how human kind give worship
via stone or wood carved offerings left at temples or churches.
