Betty Clarke

Betty lived in East and Central Africa for fifteen years. The forms and decoration of the ceramics are influenced by her time there, from natural forms, pottery and textiles.

'I use two clays: a smooth red and a smooth black body and the bowls are handbuilt, a combination of coiling and moulding. When the bowls are leather-hard I scrape them to the desired thickness and I burnish the outside. I only use one glaze and obtain colour variation through underglaze.'
