Jan Petrie

Jan's paintings are inspired by the landscape of Southern England. In these recent paintings she seeks to convey a pared-down, elemental sense of place and mood – the impressions left in ones memory.

Although she works in oils on canvas, her choice of other materials is very personal – She was born in the Forest of Dean and the earth pigments she uses come from the Clearwell caves there. The choice of copper, gold aluminium or silver foil is both for their aesthetic qualities and also as a representation of the elements themselves – the basic building blocks of a landscape. For the same reason, she often uses stone dust – pumice, lava and sandstone which also give a texture to the work and to alter the reflections on the surface of the paintings.
