Lesley Ann Riches
Lesley has lived in Ross on Wye since 1966 during which time she worked on various art projects in a voluntary capacity.
In 2004 Lesley enrolled at HCAD on a two year part time art and design course graduating in 2006.
"I always had a desire to do work in metal, be that jewellery and/or sculpture."
When she started out, Lesley always thought that she would make jewellery, but after a while she realized that BIG was the way to go, and as big jewellery was perhaps not so practical she started experimenting with sculpture.
Lesley was always to be found in the small metals workshop to the exclusion of everything else. “I love the way that the metal changes form, gentle folds, sharp dangerous points; all are possible” she says “Copper is my favorite medium it has a character all of its own, from soft pink to fiery red, black, green and a whole range of rainbow colours in between.
All are there hidden in the metal, just waiting to be released by the searing heat of the blowtorch - Like painting with fire.”
Lesley is inspired by all forms of nature; fungi, leaves, shells and undersea creatures and structures. “I love to look at the decay and erosion brought about by nature, and try to emulate this effect in my work.”
Lesley also makes unusual one off pieces of jewellery in silver and gold.
