Penelope Timms

Penelope is currently studying on the BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts at Hereford College of Arts.

Her previous experience includes furniture design made from recycled wood, costume and interior design and renovation of old houses.

Penelope’s current work is influenced by the innovative and imaginative performances created by the Cirque du Soleil. In particular she is fascinated by the energy and movements of the performers. She captures this energy through live drawings. Focusing on specific areas in the drawings, she then translates these into semi-figurative forms.

"My work comprises of free standing 3D figurative sculptures and layered glass panels."

"My work is influenced particularly by The Cirque Du Soleil. The elements I take from the circus are: movement within the performers acts; Abstract bodily form; theatrical costume and props used within the acts. How they all interact and influence one another are important to the main structure of my work."

"To capture this particular combination of movement I study both the Cirque Du Soleil and other smaller circuses at live shows and using a variety of media produce ‘live drawings. I like to capture this element of combined movement of performer, props and costumes."

"From the ink sketches I chose areas which excited me most, I trace these sections capturing every detail, then taking various combinations of these tracings I layer and photo copy them until I capture a semi-abstract form which I feel gives a feeling of movement and a suitable figure that will fit with the circus act I am creating. I use several thicknesses of Iron Binding wire and recycled glass to make the 3D figurative form which is then fired in a kiln so the glass and wire elements fuse together creating a semi transparent body which reflects the light."

"For the costumes I use a combination of carefully selected fabrics: shimmering organza, embossed metallic/nylon, fine muslin, and old music score sheet, soft leather all in bright colours and gold thread and beads to decorate. All the fabrics are distressed to give an aged, worn appearance." "All my sculptures have a mask instead of a face. These are created from soft leather which I cut heat and burnt to shape and distress. I use the same movement and circus elements in my glass panels. I layers sheets of reclaimed glass with a combination of unusual materials such as wire, foil, glass beads and fritz, pewter and enamels which create fascinating effects within the glass when fired in the kiln. I use up to 5 layers of glass creating a sense of depth."
